In 1995 CIREH received a 6-year training grant from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in their program entitled, International Training and Research in Environmental and Occupational Health. CIREH was funded for a second cycle in 2001.

This program has provided various levels of training to health research specialists in the areas of environmental health, occupational health and public health from research and educational institutions in Central and Eastern Europe (Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Romania) and, more recently, in The Gambia, West Africa.

This is how our Network started. Graduates of the CIREH program become Fogarty Alumni and part of this exciting initiative.

The 10 Year Anniversary Network Meeting was celebrated June 11-14, 2006 at Smolenice Castle, Slovakia.

The same year, CIREH received an additional training grant from the Fogarty International Center entitled, International Collaborative Trauma and Injury Research Training (ICTIRT).

This program seeks to facilitate the implementation of effective, multidisciplinary strategies in order to conduct research and teach in the area of injury prevention. Focus areas for study include violence prevention, motor vehicle safety, occupational injury prevention, fire safety, drowning prevention, agricultural injuries, traumatic injury from disasters, acute and trauma care, or pre-hospital care.

Trainees from the ICTIRT program come from various countries in Central and Eastern Europe, and are a welcome addition to our Fogary Alumni family.
